Tips for Navigating Deals at Kohl’s

Kohl’s is cornering the market on the early birds this year, with Black Friday sales starting in store at 4 a.m. Boasting over 300 sale items, from toys to housewares to clothing to jewelry, you’ll likely find something for everyone (and yourself) along their aisles.  Due to the economy, many people (including myself) are shopping for necessities during these super sale days. You’ll find a range of items slashed over 50 percent, including coats, sleepwear and every woman’s favorite- shoes.  No dummy to marketing, Kohl’s has Wal-Mart beat by an hour for their opening sales.

If holiday shopping gets you frazzled with bustling crowds, a maze of sale items and burgeoning kiosks, you can make use of Kohl’s online tools for creating a shopping list. Simply go to Kohl’s online and click the tab, “create a shopping list” and scroll through the volumes of pages or search by item. Then select and print! This, by the way will save you money if you stick to that list. Take time if you can, to stop by your local Kohl’s before opening of Black Friday sales. ( I suggest stopping late Wednesday evening, since displays will be in place in most stores then).  See where your items are located in the store and you’ll save even more time hunting these bargains once frenzied shoppers hit the doors at 4 a.m.

In addition, take time on a pre-game shopping excursion to try on items or pick colors. You’ll find this saves you ALOT of time later if you know not only where, but specifics of what you’re going to bag.  Also, ask a sales associate if there are any items that will be moved once the stores are closed Wednesday night. Some store associates have given me hints on location of items and on occassion have informed me of additional discounts or hot buys that I may have missed in circulars.

-Remember, there is no savings for the sleepy or the late shopper- Kohl’s sales end at 1p.m. ( In years past this was promptly on the hour). So get there early to make the most of selection and deals.

Here are a few of the deals to look forward to:

Avoid Couponing Mistakes

When it comes to coupons, most people make costly mistakes. Avoiding those common pitfalls is easy and you’ll actually double (or even triple) your savings with a little knowledge. I’ve used coupons for nearly twenty years now, and have successfully raised a gaggle of five kids on little more than thrift, resourcefulness and sheer will power.  To me, couponing is a sport worthy of Olympic quality skills and training.  You can’t just clip coupons and expect to maximize savings. Strategy is essential.

Here are the top four coupon pitfalls to avoid:

  1. Using coupons without a sale. Some people are content to use coupons at face value. It’s true this does keep save cash, but you’re missing out on the best value when you don’t investigate sales. Like poker, you need to know when to “hold ‘em and when to fold them”.  The only exceptions to this rule are items that aren’t offered for sale routinely or if you are in dire need of a certain purchase.
  2.  Not comparing competitor prices: You should get in the habit of laying out Sunday flyers and comparing deals. You will find, most weeks, similar products offered for sale. It’s very likely to save the most cash you’ll have to go to two or more stores. Rite Aid, CVS and Walgreens are in direct competition with each other so check their sites for the best prices.
  3. Forgetting to use coupons on buy one, get one free products:  Most, (not all) retailers will let you use one coupon for each item on a buy one get one free deal. This means you usually can use a coupon on the free item also. You will knock that amount off the total price and bring the overall cost down significantly.  Try doing this at CVS, Walgreens, Kroger’s and K-Mart, as these retailers typically allow this process.
  4. Not using a rewards card to its capacity: Reward cards, like CVS and Kroger’s, offer added savings, couple those with coupons and you’ll save a bundle. The same goes with using a rewards credit card that pays cash back on your purchases. Some like Discover will give you 5% back on purchases. If you pay off your credit card each month, you are saving by using your card on top of coupon use.

Coupon use is a strategy that takes some initial investment of time. As you improve on knowing when sales are offered, and understanding how to stack these, the time factor will diminish. However, do plan on about an hour a week to compare prices and lay out a shopping game plan.

Coupons to Save on Television and Movies

Today’s post is on yet another cool money saving idea by media guru, Kevin, of www.satellitetvguru.net. He’s got some great ways to enjoy entertainment perks without draining your wallet. Too often when people think they have to budget their money, it means not having any fun. The truth is- you’ve just got to be creative! There are plenty of ways to enjoy the latest movies or media on a budget. Here Kevin shares with us his expert knowledge for entertainment savings tips:

Coupons to Save on Television and Movies

Cutting costs is the name of the game during tough economic times like these and for most American families, the entertainment budget is usually the first thing to go. Most folks will look to cut back on current programming packages that they may have through Dish Network or DirecTV. That’s a good idea for a lot of people, but for some of us that just doesn’t go far enough. Using services from Netflix, iTunes, Amazon and Boxee can give families cheaper alternatives while providing a great level of quality. Home entertainment isn’t the only place we can save money. At your multiplex, we can also save some cash by purchasing movie tickets online through sites like Fandango.

The days of going to your local video store for movies and games are just about over. Using services such Netflix, customers can make a queue of movies and have them sent automatically with no late fees. Postage, along with a return envelope, is already paid for from your monthly fee. Plans range from $4.99 to $16.99 with varying levels of use. Netflix offers a free two-week trial of their services if you sign up at Netflix.com. Finding coupons from existing Netflix customers is also a popular way to sign up for service and may be providing your buddy with some free Netflix time as well.

Netflix doesn’t just offer DVDs and Blu-rays to rent; they are also pioneering the streaming of movies. They offer such a large array of content that adding the service to existing cable or satellite service is becoming a popular trend for families. Many will cut their TV packages and supplement content with Netflix through either DVD rentals or the use of streaming movies and TV shows over the internet. You can either hook up your computer, PC or Mac, to your television or use a Roku box. The box, which can used on HDTVs and can be used on your wireless network, runs for $100 which will carry not only Netflix, but Amazon on Demand and Major Leagues Baseball games. Netflix carries a huge amount of children’s programming, TV shows recent releases and an extensive archive of films even through instant Netflix.

Another popular way of streaming content over the internet is through the use of Boxee, a free application used on your computer. Through Boxee, users can stream Netflix, Pandora internet radio and Hulu, the popular website that carries new programming such as Hell’s Kitchen, The Office, 30 Rock and Dancing With The Stars. Hulu also carries a wide assortment of cable content. More tech-savvy users have even purchased an Apple TV unit and installed Boxee on it so it can be used on HD televisions, though this method is not without bugs or downtime since Boxee on Apple TV isn’t a supported feature. By using Apple TV, users can also stream content through iTunes which can deliver even more à la carte programming for families.

What if you’re waiting on your next batch of DVDs from Netflix and there isn’t anything that interests you through their “Instant” format? You’ve probably seen those red kiosks outside McDonald’s, Wal-Marts and Walgreens. These RedBox booths offer DVD rentals at $1 a night for both new releases and first-run films. It’s easy, painless and most of all, inexpensive. You can even reserve movies online to pick-up later. If you sign up for the RedBox newsletter, they will even offer you a free rental. Sign up for texts and you’ll be given a promo code for another free rental. Not bad.

Since we do want to get out every now and then, coupons for theatrical releases are sometimes appreciated. Fandango, one of the country’s leading online ticket services, will offer $1 tickets to a new release each weekend. Called “Fandango Friday,” the first 50 people to redeem a promo code issued in an email can purchase $1 tickets to one of the weekend’s big releases. You have to be pretty fast to nab those tickets.

If you miss out on $1 Fandango tickets, you could always run over to Redbox and use that $1 on the latest release. Too bad popcorn and Sour Patch Kids aren’t as cheap.

2 CVS Coupon Savings to Use NOW!!!

cvs medicare

Two different CVS coupons this week- One is an “at the register” coupon that is printed out after purchase. You’ll save $5 off a $25 purchase! Be watching for it. (My friend threw hers away, resulting in a mad scramble scouring the trash last night).  That must be used by Sunday November 08, so if you haven’t stopped at CVS this week, don’t forget to make a plan to stop and make a small purchase just to grab that coupon. Go back by Sunday to redeem or immediately plan to use it on the rest of your items in a separate payment.

The second coupon you’ll find at this site.  Grab this one by taking a short quiz on Medicare. It’s a $5 off a 30 buck purchase. Quiz is easy, though I can always do without quizzes- JUST GIVE US THE COUPONS CVS!!!

Remember: Use these first when paying, instead of handing over all your coupons.  You may drop the total purchase below the required $25 or $ 30 amount (depending which coupon you’re using). If you do that, the computer will block your CVS coupon from being applied. (ugh). Once these CVS coupons are rung through the register, then produce your manufacturers’ coupons to be taken off the total.

Right at Home for the Holidays!

zuchini bread picHere is a simply wonderful holiday gift to make in advance- straight from our friends at SG Johnson (the same folks who bring you Glade and Ziploc). If you haven’t ever taken a gander, it is worth signing up for their newsletter, “Right at Home”.

Packed with money and time saving help for busy moms (and dads) Right at Home offers real life recipes, cleaning advice and home decorating help. I used to subscribe to a certain unnamed décor and cooking site, belonging to a well known stock trading female whose initials are M.S. This proved to not be such a “Good Thing” since most of the projects on said site evoked significant anxiety on my part. Depression quickly followed when my “Elegant Canapés Stuffed with Belgium Fungal Truffles” resembled gloppy mud balls, even though I’d followed the directions to the letter. You shouldn’t need anti-depressants and rounds of affirming therapy simply to cook dinner.

My level of skill for Home Ec consists of those projects that involve either a glue gun, blender, or butter knife. I can step it up from time to time and manipulate all three simultaneously for special occasions. Get me much farther than that and you’ll see me sniveling with failure buried beneath a heap of ruined puff pastry.

This is why I love Right At Home.

It’s conceivable to :

A) Read the entire newsletter which isn’t full of garbage and is a quick read.

B) Enjoy creating projects or recipes that do not require a thesaurus or an online tutorial in French.

 C) Afford the items you’re making and as well as be able to pronounce them.

An added plus are the frequent coupons you’ll nab.

This is an example of the easy and fun stuff you can find in Right At Home: (note only 4 steps!!! whee)

Holiday Zucchini Bread

Studded with chocolate, cranberries and pecans, this delicious bread makes gift giving a lot more personal.
Made with whole wheat flour, grated zucchini and heart-healthy nuts, these loaves are a welcome alternative to the typical holiday treats. For your next dinner party or brunch, wrap them in Saran™ Premium Wrap, tie with a ribbon, and send them home with your guests.

Or consider using the recipe to create a gift in a jar. Simply download and print our recipe card and attach it with a festive ribbon to a fun jar.

  • Total Time : 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Prep Time : 15 minutes
  • Cook Time : 45 minutes
  • Chill Time : 10 minutes
  • Servings : 4

ingredients

  • 2 medium zucchini, about 3/4 pound, grated
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup whole or low-fat milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 3/4 cup dark or milk chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans

directions

step 1 Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Prepare 4 mini loaf pans measuring 3 by 6 inches by rubbing the bottom and sides of the pans with butter and then sprinkling with flour to coat, tapping out the excess flour.
step 2 In a large mixing bowl add the grated zucchini, sugar, egg and oil. Mix well. Add the all-purpose and whole-wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, milk and vanilla. Mix well to combine.
step 3 Add the cranberries, chocolate chips and pecans. Stir to thoroughly incorporate. Fill each of the prepared loaf pans about 3/4 full with batter and bake for 45 minutes or until a wooden toothpick or a knife inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean.
step 4 Remove pans from the oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Then run a small knife around the sides of the loaves to loosen them from the pans, and tip the pans sideways to turn the bread out onto the cooling rack, using the knife or a flat spatula to remove the loaves without breaking them. Once they are cooled completely, wrap the bread with Saran™ Premium Wrap or cellophane (or place in Ziploc® Holiday Containers) and give as gifts.

Five Ways to Save on Holiday Entertaining

Holidays are meant to be a time of family, food and festivities. However, cooking for crowds, baking for school parties and having snacks on hand for endless guests can have a negative impact on your budget.

How do you stay in the holiday spirit without Grinching on your budget?

Here are some quick tips to keep holiday entertaining cheaply jolly:

  1. Stock up when there is a sale of pop, juice (for mixers and teetotalers) and alcohol. Shop CVS sales on liquor. (They have great buys each week.)
  2. Store up crackers, cheese and non-perishable snacks when sales and coupons can be used. Buy two of each, one for your family’s use and one for entertaining. Keep a supply of entertaining supplies handy.
  3. Pick up store bought sugar cookie dough, either packages or refrigerated kind to have on hand for last minute cookie bakes. You can use this in a variety of ways. Make decorated and fancy cookies or roll in sugar and cinnamon for Snickerdoodles in a jiffy.  As a truly cost cutting option, make a giant batch from scratch and store in the freezer for quick and easy cookies in a hurry.
  4. Grab some inexpensive items at the Dollar Tree for cheap gifts for last minute exchanges. Suggestions are a few kid items, such as coloring books and crayons and toys. For teen gifts, hair accessories or candles. Adults can always benefit from cooking utensils or potholders and kitchen towels.  Snag a few and keep on hand, you can wrap these up with a quick plate of cookies and have an impromptu gift ready in minutes.
  5. Use your rewards credit card for all purchases to gain cash back. Money spent this way won’t ding the budget as quickly and you’ll be offered discounts in various merchants as well.  Just be sure to pay the balance off each month to keep credit savvy in the New Year.
