There are plenty of ways to enjoy the latest movies or media on a budget. Here Kevin shares with us his expert knowledge for entertainment savings tips:
Coupons to Save on Television and Movies
Cutting costs is the name of the game during tough economic times like these and for most American families, the entertainment budget is usually the first thing to go. Most folks will look to cut back on current programming packages that they may have through Dish Network or DirecTV. That’s a good idea for a lot of people, but for some of us that just doesn’t go far enough. Using services from Netflix, iTunes, Amazon and Boxee can give families cheaper alternatives while providing a great level of quality. Home entertainment isn’t the only place we can save money. At your multiplex, we can also save some cash by purchasing movie tickets online through sites like Fandango.
The days of going to your local video store for movies and games are just about over. Using services such Netflix, customers can make a queue of movies and have them sent automatically with no late fees. Postage, along with a return envelope, is already paid for from your monthly fee. Plans range from $4.99 to $16.99 with varying levels of use. Netflix offers a free two-week trial of their services if you sign up at Netflix.com. Finding coupons from existing Netflix customers is also a popular way to sign up for service and may be providing your buddy with some free Netflix time as well.
Netflix doesn’t just offer DVDs and Blu-rays to rent; they are also pioneering the streaming of movies. They offer such a large array of content that adding the service to existing cable or satellite service is becoming a popular trend for families. Many will cut their TV packages and supplement content with Netflix through either DVD rentals or the use of streaming movies and TV shows over the internet. You can either hook up your computer, PC or Mac, to your television or use a Roku box. The box, which can used on HDTVs and can be used on your wireless network, runs for $100 which will carry not only Netflix, but Amazon on Demand and Major Leagues Baseball games. Netflix carries a huge amount of children’s programming, TV shows recent releases and an extensive archive of films even through instant Netflix.
Another popular way of streaming content over the internet is through the use of Boxee, a free application used on your computer. Through Boxee, users can stream Netflix, Pandora internet radio and Hulu, the popular website that carries new programming such as Hell’s Kitchen, The Office, 30 Rock and Dancing With The Stars. Hulu also carries a wide assortment of cable content. More tech-savvy users have even purchased an Apple TV unit and installed Boxee on it so it can be used on HD televisions, though this method is not without bugs or downtime since Boxee on Apple TV isn’t a supported feature. By using Apple TV, users can also stream content through iTunes which can deliver even more à la carte programming for families.
What if you’re waiting on your next batch of DVDs from Netflix and there isn’t anything that interests you through their “Instant” format? You’ve probably seen those red kiosks outside McDonald’s, Wal-Marts and Walgreens. These RedBox booths offer DVD rentals at $1 a night for both new releases and first-run films. It’s easy, painless and most of all, inexpensive. You can even reserve movies online to pick-up later. If you sign up for the RedBox newsletter, they will even offer you a free rental. Sign up for texts and you’ll be given a promo code for another free rental. Not bad.
Since we do want to get out every now and then, coupons for theatrical releases are sometimes appreciated. Fandango, one of the country’s leading online ticket services, will offer $1 tickets to a new release each weekend. Called “Fandango Friday,” the first 50 people to redeem a promo code issued in an email can purchase $1 tickets to one of the weekend’s big releases. You have to be pretty fast to nab those tickets.
If you miss out on $1 Fandango tickets, you could always run over to Redbox and use that $1 on the latest release. Too bad popcorn and Sour Patch Kids aren’t as cheap.
